Wedding Rituals Symbolism

Weddings are ancient rituals that symbolize a couple’s commitment to each other. The word wedding comes from the Anglo-Saxon term wedd, that means “pledge”. The pledge refers to the commitment the groom makes to the bride’s father to compensate him for taking his daughter.
The exchange of rings comes from ancient Egypt and symbolizes trust, unity, and timelessness. A ring has no beginning or end as the love that unites a couple.
The eating of cake is another ancient tradition, it represents the offering of food to the gods and as a part of making the wedding a sacred ritual.
The practice of brides carrying flowers is similarly ancient. Greek, Romans, and Egyptians carried aromatic herbs and spices to ward off bad luck during weddings. Later on, flowers of all variety were added to symbolize a new beginning and fertility, happiness, and fidelity.
